Rolling element bearing fatigue spalls were propagated for several test conditions well beyond the laboratory criteria of 6.5 square millimeters used in the author’s laboratory. Usually more than one mode of fatigue spall propagation is involved when large spalls develop. The information provided in this paper can be used to gain an appreciation of the total useful life of a bearing and to allow a more accurate diagnosis of fatigue spall damage.
