A metalforming inlet zone analysis is developed for a viscoplastic lubricant that is Newtonian below some critical stress level at which it shears plastically. The analysis includes the effects of variations in the lubricant viscosity and shear strength with pressure, and curvature of the tooling surface. The results of the analysis are compared with experimental measurements of the lubricant film thickness in rolling chemical lead with mineral oil and silicone lubricants.
