The viscoelastic region is characterized as a transition between elastic and viscous behavior. The transition may depend upon both the state of the system and the rheological domain. The former is related to temperature (and other state variables); the latter to the force-time-distance variation. In this connection, the concepts of shear and elongational viscosity are discussed and compared.
