Bearing stability difficulties of a 10,000-kw gas-turbine plant comprising three independent shafts (those of the low-pressure compressor, the high-pressure compressor, and the power-turbine rotors) are discussed. The bearing design changes which finally resulted in a solution of this instability problem are outlined, followed by a theoretical discussion of dynamic shaft and bearing performance which explains the experimental findings.
