Abstract
Testing methods and technique applicable to field conditions are described. Data are presented which have been secured as a result of such tests under service conditions. Laboratory tests designed to measure the carbon-forming tendencies have little relation to results secured in service. At present the only satisfactory proof of merit is service or simulated service tests, but the procurement of reliable data is difficult. Cylinder wear is shown to affect lubrication by preventing proper ring seal.
