Rapid advances in computer vision science and technology have inspired the development of innovative computer vision-based solutions to challenging problems associated with civil engineering structures and infrastructure systems. In recent years, computer vision sensing has been drawing attention and gaining popularity in three major areas in the civil and structural engineering community: (i) vision-based sensors for structural displacement measurement and structural health monitoring (SHM) applications, which is the focus of this book; (ii) automated computer visual inspection and condition assessment, with or without using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs); and (iii) onsite construction tracking and safety monitoring. This concluding chapter summarizes the capabilities and open challenges of computer vision sensors based on the authors’ work focusing on structural displacement response measurement and SHM. This chapter is also intended to share with readers the collective achievements of the research community in all of the three major areas by providing a state-of-the-art literature review. Challenges and opportunities are outlined to assist the structural engineering and computer science research communities in setting an agenda for future research.
