Optimal control strategies suitable for implementation on a supervisory digital computer controller are developed to maximize the coefficient of performance of the centrifugal compressor subsystem for a building central cooling plant. The analytical determination of the optimum strategies is based on models, determined from experimental data, of the power consumption of the centrifugal compressor subsystem components. The supervisory control strategies determine optimum set points for the evaporator entering and leaving water temperatures, condenser leaving water temperature and the storage tank return water temperature. Cost function values are given for a range of system parameters.
