Abstract
This paper presents equations for the direct determination of the proportions of a helical spring which will contain the least possible amount of material. In general, it is possible by this method to effect considerable economies over a spring whose dimensions have been selected arbitrarily. The advantages are illustrated by numerical examples. The method also has been applied to leaf springs and design equations are presented.
