Abstract
One of the limit design theorems of ideal plasticity is applied to find an upper bound on the initial indentation pressure for the case where a flat, smooth die is pushed into an inset band of rectangular cross section. The dependence of the upper bound on the clearance and width of the band is given, and a possible extension to asymmetrically inset bands is suggested.
