In order to determine what occurred in an injury-producing event, such as a motor vehicle accident or a fall, it is essential to understand both the environment in which the event occurs and the specifics of the injuries. Information about the environment can then be used as part of the biomechanical analysis to determine how the person moves, what structures they may have contacted and the severity of any contacts, which can then be used to determine the expected injuries. Another approach is to begin with the injury specifics, determine what type of mechanical loading is necessary to cause that injury, and finally assess what environmental factors would lead to that loading.
