Although risk factors for atherosclerosis such as genetic predisposition and diet are systemic, the disease develops non-uniformly throughout the arterial system. Lesions preferentially occur in curved arteries and branching regions and their distribution has been observed to change with age in both humans and rabbits . If local blood flow patterns play a role in the initiation of atherosclerosis, the age-related differences may be a consequence of changes in the flow characteristics.
