The intervertebral disc (IVD) is the largest avascular structure in the human body, consisting of the nucleus pulposus (NP) surrounded by the annulus fibrosus (AF), see Figure 1. Cellular nutrition occurs mainly by diffusion from the vascular network surrounding the disc . Poor nutritional supply is believed to be one of the causes for disc degeneration [2–4]. Thus, it is important to investigate solute transport in IVD for understanding the etiology of IVD degeneration.
