To appropriately tissue engineer load-bearing soft tissues requires reproducing the tissues mechanical structure. The most important mechanical component is collagen, which forms a cross-linked fiber network. Soft tissues adapt their structures to their functions, by aligning the predominant fiber orientation with the loading direction.
