Abstract
For ships navigating in ice floe fields, ship-ice-wave interactions may have significant influence on ship performance and ice impact forces. This is because added mass may affect the hydrodynamic interaction between a ship with ice floes. This paper explores the influence of added mass using a Boundary Element Method (BEM). The model considers the effects of wave frequencies and propagation that are ignored by the conventional Popov (1967) method. Preliminary results are presented for a regular waves scenario whereby a Wigley hull passes by a freely floating ice floe modelled as a round disk. A parametric analysis on the effects of the added mass demonstrates the importance of accounting for multibody interactions.
