Abstract
A project was undertaken at Sun Microsystems, Inc. to benchmark DFMA on two workstations. Using both standard DFMA metrics and indirect process metrics, as well as interviews and discussions with development team members, the two products were found to be similar. Incongruities were noted, however, between perceptions of the products and the results of the analysis. Perceptions significantly impacted design decisions in the absence of readily available DFMA metrics.
