On account of nonlinear factors, such as backlash and time-varying mesh stiffness, a gear system is a typical nonlinear vibration system, and self-excited vibration will take place possibly during gear meshing. In order to analyze the nonlinear dynamic response of spur gear systems in detail, a bidirectional mesh model is developed, in which the meshes both on the line of action from driving gear to driven gear and on the line of back action from driven gear to driving gear are considered. And also, the deflections’ effects on backlashes of gear pairs are taken into account in the model. The results of numerical studies have shown that the backlashes have significant effects on the dynamic response of gear systems and the bidirectional gear meshing will occur in most cases if the initial backlash of gear pair is small enough.
