This paper deals with a second order successive approximation optimization method SAM, which is based on the authors’ recently published feasible descent cone algorithm SSOPT. In particular, the paper reviews the success that has been achieved in the practical application of SAM to structural optimization problems, both with reference to results already published and new results, presented here. In addition extensions to the underlying feasible descent cone method is proposed with the view to improving the generality and efficiency of the embracing SAM algorithm.
