The paper shows some recent results for a two-degree of freedom beam model, with lumped parameters of elastic and plastic behavior, as a tool for interpreting anomalous response behaviors of structural elements (beams and plates) subjected to transverse impulsive loading [1]. Such behaviors may occur when the structure has fully fixed edges and the transverse loading leads to extensional permanent strains. The 2DoF model predicts behaviors like those from numerical solutions of discretized beams and plates, but facilitates more extensive calculations. A single DoF model also provides important insights [2, 3], but the 2DoF model [4, 5] reveals the complexity, including chaos, not shown by a SDoF model.
